Closet Organization

It’s that time again. You’re probably asking yourself “what time is that, Noula?” Well, it’s time to clean out your closet. And I’m not talking about your basic seasonal switch-around. I mean it’s time to clear it all out, take a good look at what you’re working with, and start from scratch. This will not be your average cleaning. It’s time to re-organize. I promise you, after this, you won’t stare at your closet full of clothes and still feel like you have nothing to wear.

First things first, you need to organize your clothes by type of clothing item: cardigans, hoodies, t-shirts, blouses, tank tops, leggings, pants, accessories, loungewear, and workout clothes ALL get their own space. And don’t forget about shoes! (But we’ll tackle those another time). This next step might make you think I’m out of my mind, but it’s a game changer. You NEED to organize all of these items by colour. Start with your whites and go through the colours until the deepest black (because we know that our black basics aren’t all the same shade).

When I’m doing this, there is a rule that I always follow; if it still has a tag, it goes in the bag (to give to a friend or to donate, of course). Believe me, you aren’t going to wear it. But that doesn’t mean that I’m suggesting you throw out all of your neglected items. You might find a gem that has just been hiding from you for months or even years. If you think that piece you fished out of the back of your closet has potential, keep it, but don’t keep anything that you think is going to sit on a hanger and attract dust. Be honest with yourself. I always think of it this way: if you get rid of pieces that aren’t working for you anymore, you free up space in your closet for a little bit of magic. Slowly, you’ll fill in those gaps with items that you love.

This sounds like a big challenge but get your BFF and a glass (or bottle) of wine and do as Carrie and the girls from Sex and the City would: Toss it or Take it!
