BE YOU

Growing up in Park-Ex/ Mile End with three siblings, I was a leader in my own way even though I was shy and dyslexic. Out of the four kids, I always stood out. I always wanted to be set apart from my brother and two sisters. I even paved the way for my older sister. I was the first to shave my legs and pluck my eyebrows at the age of ten. In grade school I bedazzled my uniform, always landing me in detention. In high school was when I knew that textbooks weren’t for me and that the world of beauty is what I wanted to pursue.

I loved hanging out with older people because I admired them. I would watch them moisturize, put on their make-up and tease their hair. There was one woman in particular. She was a small-time model that worked at the neighborhood bakery but her makeup, hair and wardrobe were always impeccable no matter if she was on a job or taking your order. She inspired me to be myself and show that unique and creative side of me in my everyday life.

I would travel two hours by bus, going and coming, to find my pieces. My many phases and styles led me out of the city, at times. I dressed how I wanted and never let anyone tell me what to do. Sure, there were people who didn’t understand me or my vision and they didn’t include me because I was different, but I was proud of what I was able to say through fashion and I didn’t let it stop me.

Until today, I believe that you attract what you put out into the world. In my experience, I have learned that in order to be successful, you need to be passionate. I always was and still am passionate about doing what you love, and I hope share that with you.
